UNEATLANTICO will take part in the opening of the ‘Muxart Retrospective’ exhibition in Laredo

The European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), in collaboration with the FUNIBER-UNEATLANTICO cultural initiative, is launching the Laredo Art Space on Friday 17 April – Casa de la Villa, which will host the opening of the exhibition ‘Muxart Retrospective’, dedicated to the renowned Catalan artist Jaume Muxart (Martorell, 1922–2019).

The exhibition brings together a total of 34 works, mainly oil paintings, as well as some prints, which reflect the artist’s creative development over the last fifty years of his career. Among the pieces on display are series such as ‘Angels’, ‘Big Bang’, ‘The Mediterranean’ and ‘Butterflies’, as well as recurring themes from different creative periods, such as harlequins, owls and flowers.

Much of the collection comes from the FUNIBER-UNEATLANTICO Cultural Foundation, supplemented by works from private collections, notably those of the exhibition’s curator, Federico Fernández, director of the cultural foundation and a personal friend of the artist.

Muxart achieved national recognition as a member of the influential Taüll art group, which emerged in Barcelona in the 1950s and was linked to the avant-garde movements of the time, alongside artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Cuixart, Tharrats and Guinovart. His work is distinguished by the intensity of its colour, the richness of its impasto and a marked creative vision, guided by instinct, as the artist himself stated: “instinct creates, the rule corrects”.

His extensive career was marked by major national and international exhibitions. Furthermore, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona and was a member of the Royal Academy of Sant Jordi. It is worth noting that UNEATLANTICO previously organised a tribute exhibition following his passing.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until 31 May. The opening will take place on 17 April at 12 noon and will be attended by the Director-General for Culture of the Government of Cantabria, Eva Guillermina Fernández, the Rector of UNEATLANTICO, Rubén Calderón, the curator Federico Fernández, as well as local authorities led by the Mayor of Laredo, Miguel González.
