The Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO) recently hosted a talk entitled ‘Promoting Gender Equality in Sport’, an event at which Olympic athletes shared their views and experiences on the inclusion of women in sport.
The event was attended by Ruth Beitia, a four-time Olympic athlete and international medallist; Jane Abascal, winner of Spain’s first Olympic gold medal in sailing; and Miguel Heres, a lecturer at UNEATLANTICO.
During the panel discussion held in the university auditorium, the speakers addressed the evolving role of women in high-performance sport, highlighting the progress made in recent decades as well as the challenges that remain.
The participants also reflected on the importance of creating equal opportunities, visibility and institutional support for female athletes, stressing the need to continue promoting policies that foster equality at all levels of sport.
As part of the event, a short documentary was also shown, focusing on the importance of integrating women into the sporting workplace and placing particular emphasis on preparing female athletes for their professional future after retiring from competition.
The event concluded with a discussion between students on the Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) degree programme and the speakers, during which the students were able to ask questions and exchange views. This exchange reaffirmed UNEATLANTICO’s commitment to promoting gender equality and fostering a more inclusive approach to sport.
