The Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European Atlantic University, UNEATLANTICO) hosted the formative lecture “Reporters, in danger of extinction?” , organized by the Real Federación Cántabra de Fútbol (RFCF), the Universidad Europea del Atlántico and the Fundación Real Racing Club, with the aim of reflecting on the role and importance of journalism in narrating and broadcasting the sport.

The presentation brought together students interested in the field of communication, sports and media work on the ground. For about an hour and a half, García Muñiz shared experiences accumulated throughout an extensive professional career in which he has covered the Olympic Games, World Championships, Eurocups and major international tournaments, as well as following Rafael Nadal’s career for years.

The event was presented highlighting the journalist’s connection with Cantabria and his professional journey from his beginnings in Santander to become one of the most recognized voices of national sports journalism. Also, their regular participation in different meetings and conferences related to sport and communication was highlighted.

During the talk, he reflected on the evolution of reporting and the importance of “being in the place of the news”, advocating the need for journalists to maintain direct contact with the protagonists and develop the ability to observe, listen and tell stories from the vicinity.

Through numerous historical examples and personal anecdotes, the journalist addressed some of the great moments lived by professionals of sports communication and generalist, from historical broadcasts to coverage of international events of great impact. In this context, he emphasized essential values for the exercise of journalism such as calm in stressful situations, adaptability, originality and passion for work.

García Muñiz also insisted on the importance of initiative and effort in the early professional stages, encouraging students to go beyond their comfort zone and to understand communication as a vocational profession. “Journalism has no surnames,” he highlighted during the session, claiming the versatility and commitment of communicators beyond specialization.

The activity is part of the initiatives promoted by UNEATLANTICO to bring students real experiences of professionals in the field of communication and sports, promoting practical learning and direct contact with industry leaders.
