The European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), through its PhD Programme in Physical Activity and Sport: Risks and Benefits coordinated by the researcher and lecturer, Dr. Álvaro Velarde Sotres, has launched an innovative scientific collaboration with the Cantabrian Athletics Federation (FCA).

This joint project focuses on carrying out evaluations of FCA athletes during the season, with the aim of analysing injury risk factors, fatigue and sporting performance. The initiative covers disciplines such as long-distance, middle-distance, race walking, sprint, hurdles, jumps, combined and throws, and is primarily aimed at assessing the impact of training load and individualisation of training.

The collaboration will not only benefit the region’s top athletes, but will also drive high quality research with elite athletes, using novel, state-of-the-art technologies applied to the sporting arena.

Dr. Velarde Sotres stresses that ‘the integration of research in the sports fabric is considered a cornerstone to meet the challenges that society faces today, with trained and qualified researchers. The relevance of the Doctoral Programme is reflected in its capacity to promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences in the scientific field’. It also stresses the importance of ‘carrying out quality studies and research to provide new knowledge and scientific advances’.

It should be noted that the launch of this research is one more example of the relevant scientific studies carried out by students of the PhD programme of the European University of the Atlantic.

This initiative is part of the agreement recently signed between UNEATLANTICO and the Cantabrian Athletics Federation, which aims to promote and disseminate sport in the region. This type of action reinforces the synergy between academia and sport, consolidating Cantabria as a benchmark in research and development in the field of sport.
