The Rector of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic) (UNEATLANTICO), Rubén Calderón, has participated in an event that has counted with the distinguished presence of His Majesty King Felipe VI and has brought together counterparts from universities throughout Spain.

The Paraninfo of the University of Cantabria was the venue chosen for the official opening ceremony of the Spanish university year 2023-2024. The event was attended by His Majesty King Felipe VI, who presided over the event and delivered a speech in which he emphasized the “vital relevance” of knowledge, ability, and commitment, urging their promotion and preservation in all educational institutions in Spain.

During his speech, the King emphasized the fundamental role of universities in times of constant change, highlighting their admirable capacity for adaptation, which was especially evident during the pandemic. “That demonstration continues to highlight the vocation and capacity for service of our universities, which must continue to function as engines of the knowledge society and drive progress in all possible areas,” said the monarch.

In addition, Felipe VI stressed that the contribution of universities goes beyond the mere transfer of knowledge, as they also promote essential values for social coexistence and the development of critical capacity. With these words, His Majesty declared the 2023-2024 university year open.

The event brought together a distinguished audience that included political representatives, among them the President of Cantabria, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, who expressed her gratitude for the Royal Family’s continued support for the region, and the acting Minister of Universities, Joan Subirats. In addition, the ceremony brought together 28 university rectors from all over Spain, thus consolidating the importance and commitment of the academic community in the advancement of education and the development of Spanish society.

Before entering the auditorium, which was attended by members of the university community and representatives of society in general, His Majesty King Felipe VI greeted the 28 rectors of the Spanish universities present on this solemn occasion. During this meeting, the Rector of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico, Rubén Calderón, shared a brief but significant exchange with the monarch.
