The Cultural Work of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European Atlantic University) (UNEATLANTICO) and Fundación Universitaria Iberoamericana (FUNIBER), in collaboration with the Universidade Internacional do Cuanza (UNIC), the Spanish Embassy in Angola, the transport company AJS, and under the sponsorship of ENSA Seguros de Angola, inaugurated last October 18 the exhibition of engravings «La Conquista del Cosmos» by the artist Salvador Dalí at the Centro Cultural Manuel Rui, in the province of Huambo (Angola).

The opening event brought together various figures from the academic, cultural and institutional world, which was a highlight for the promotion of art and cultural exchange in Angola. The exhibition will be open until 3 November.

Among the personalities present was the deputy governor of Huambo for the political, social and economic sector, Dr. Angelino Elavoko, who represented the provincial government, underlining the importance of initiatives such as this for the cultural enrichment of society and the encouragement of artistic education among young people.

The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Gabriel Tchiaka, director of the Centro Cultural Manuel Rui, who hosted the exhibition and reinforced the role of space as a focal point for the promotion of arts and culture in the province.

Representing the Universidade Internacional do Cuanza (UNIC) and the Fundación Universitaria Iberoamericana (FUNIBER), was present the rector of UNIC, Dr. Carlos Jélvez, who made a detailed presentation on the life and work of Salvador Dalí, highlighting the artistic and philosophical legacy of the Catalan painter, as well as the contribution of his creations to the history of modern art.

The Vice-Rector of UNIC for the Scientific and Postgraduate Area, Dr. María Helena Rodríguez, was responsible for explaining the main paintings on display, clarifying to the public the symbolic elements and aesthetic value that characterize the surrealist style of Dalí. The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Amália Quintão, executive administrator of ENSA Seguros de Angola.

The engraving collection «The Conquest of the Cosmos» consists of eleven dry-pointed engravings, all signed and numbered in pencil. Two sketches and an original poster from the 1974 exhibition are also included. This collection is considered one of the most important works of Salvador Dalí’s career. Each of the works that make up the series represents a surreal picture of the cosmos, including planets, galaxies and stars, along with other elements of Dalí’s imagination (ants, elephants, soft clocks, etc.).

The collection continues its journey through Angola, after being exhibited in Benguela, Lubango and Luanda.
