This event, organized by the University’s International Relations Office (ORI), welcomes around 250 Erasmus mobility students from various universities, from ten Spanish cities, to participate in the annual sporting event that will take place on the campus of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO).
Today, Friday March 15, the inauguration of the National Erasmus Games (NEG) took place in the auditorium of UNEATLANTICO. Begoña Gómez del Río, Minister of Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, attended the presentation of the event on behalf of the Government of Cantabria. Likewise, the Councilor for Education of the Santander City Council, Noemí Méndez, was also present.
Mari Nieves López spoke on behalf of Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Spain. Nieves López thanked “the Government of Cantabria, the City Council of Santander, and the Universidad Europea del Atlántico. Their support is very important to carry out this project.” On behalf of the Santander section of the ESN, Ana Calleja Roldán was part of the table of honor.
The rector of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico, Rubén Calderón, made a final speech, mentioning the importance of internationalization for UNEATLANTICO. “We have more than 30% international students coming from America, Africa, and also Europe.”
The words of the rector of UNEATLANTICO gave way to a concert by Marcos Casal, the Cantabrian singer, for the enjoyment of all attendees to conclude the inauguration of this edition of the NEG Spain based in UNEATLANTICO.
Santander becomes the “national sports capital” over the weekend
On Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17, the competition between students from all over Europe will be held in indoor soccer, 3×3 basketball, and volleyball modalities at the university’s sports facilities. On the other hand, the track and field events will be held at the “Ruth Beitia” municipal facilities in La Albericia.
The NEG is an annual sporting event attended by Erasmus students from all over Spain and from the national student volunteer network: Erasmus Student Network (ESN), present in different universities throughout Spain. It should be noted that this is the first time this event is held in Santander.
The winners of each category will represent ESN Spain at the International Erasmus Games, to be held in Wroclaw, Poland, from May 30 to June 2.
