The nutritionist of Real Racing Club Santander, Juan Carlos Llamas García, gave a talk to students of the subject Ergogenic Aids of the third year of the degrees in Human Nutrition and Dietetics (NHD) and Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport (CAFYD) taught at the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO).
The teacher of the subject, Maria Elexpuru Zabaleta, has highlighted the importance of this intervention, considering that it has been an excellent opportunity for students to see the practical application of the contents taught in class.
Juan Carlos Llamas, with a vast experience in sports nutrition and supplementation in various modalities, has shared his knowledge on nutritional supplementation. During the first part of his talk, he explained how to design the supplementation for the members of a cycling team, taking as a reference his previous work as nutritionist of the professional World Tour team, Movistar Team. She emphasized the need to adapt supplementation individually, taking into account variables such as energy expenditure, type of stage, and weather conditions. In addition, he shared his experiences managing supplementation during trips and multi-day competitions.
In the second part of the talk, Llamas focused on the supplementation of soccer players, presenting a real case of Racing Santander, a team for which he is currently a nutritionist. He underlined the essential considerations for the ergogenic aids, including factors such as travel and anxiety for important matches, which have a direct influence on sports performance.
The intervention of Juan Carlos Llamas has been crucial to transfer to the students the practical application of the knowledge acquired in class, through concrete examples in sports such as cycling and soccer, areas in which he has a remarkable experience.
