Helena Garay, UNEATLANTICO teacher, obtains a Cum Laude PhD degree

The professor at the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO), Helena Garay, responsible for the area of Cultural Extension, has obtained the qualification of outstanding cum laude in the presentation of her doctoral work at the School of Fine Arts in Cuenca of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM). Therefore, following this formidable academic achievement, we spoke with Dr. Helena Garay to get her perspective on the matter.

Helena, first of all, congratulations. What has your PhD research topic consisted of?

It is entitled “Retratomanía, presentación y representación del individuo a través de la pose corporal en el retrato fotográfico (Portraitomania, presentation and representation of the individual through the body pose in the photographic portrait).” It deals with how the popular photographic portrait has evolved through the body pose.

What was the motivation behind that particular topic?

For years, I had been observing how the pose we adopt to take portraits of ourselves was transforming, adopting somewhat exaggerated postures, sometimes ridiculous, but above all, quite theatrical, and that fascination of constantly taking self-portraits at any time and in any place. I also love to study photography and that, perhaps, is the main motivation.

The process of a doctoral thesis is extensive and complex, subject to constant quality controls. How have you personally experienced that journey?

It has been a wonderful experience since I have worked on a subject that fascinates me. Also, the relationship with my thesis director has been very good, and that makes the process even easier.

Cum laude is a Latin locution meaning “with praise” and is used to indicate that something is excellent, especially in academic environments. What does it mean to you on a personal and professional level to receive this qualification?

The distinction, I believe, is responsible for one’s nerves before the reading of the thesis. I am happy, very happy. On a professional level, I find a deep meaning and a feeling of constant learning and growth. On a personal level, I think I am still in the process of internalizing and assimilating it completely.

To conclude. What advice would you give to students who are considering embarking on a doctoral program?

Let them choose a topic they are passionate about, that’s the key.

And finally, Helena, what are your professional goals and aspirations after obtaining your Cum Laude PhD degree?

I will continue my training because of my responsibility as a teacher, and above all, because I like to keep discovering any aspect of photography.
