Giovanna Ruiz, teacher of the IES Zapatero de Castro Urdiales gives as a guest the subject of aquatic lifeguarding and first aid to the students of the fourth year of CAFYD

Giovanna Ruiz García, alumni of the degree of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) and Primary Education (EP) in UNEATLANTICO with Master in teacher training, Master in research and educational innovation and currently a teacher of Physical Education in Secondary Education in the IES Zapatero of Castro Urdiales, attended as a guest teacher at the University to teach two classes of the subject of Aquatic Lifeguarding and first aid.

The reason for her invitation was to present proposals for the didactic application of first aid at different educational levels. The purpose of this invitation is that students, as future teachers, can learn first hand the necessary skills to address the contents of the physical education curriculum. In these years, as a physical education teacher, Giovanna has applied first aid contents with high school and vocational training students, using different methodologies, as well as participating in innovative educational projects, which have also served her to make different scientific publications.

Likewise, the activity has consisted in applying Gamification, that is, a proposal that seeks to use the fun and motivation of games to achieve a greater engagement of the students to the subject matter used and the performance in each proposed activity. In this case, the “Break-out” technique has been used, which is one of the most widely used gamified practices at the educational level, whose objective is to develop a learning experience through a game in which students have to overcome various tests to solve a specific problem that, in this case, puts them in danger. To do so, they have to solve problems, quizzes and enigmas.

In a first theoretical part, Giovanna focused on explaining her experience as a teacher together with an introduction on gamification as an educational tool within the school context, and in a second, more practical part, the students were able to put into practice a Break Out with the theme of the movie “The Purge”, in which they had to solve simulated emergency situations, from choking to cardiorespiratory arrest.

In this sense, the feedback from the students has been very positive, with a great report in terms of learning and experience as “players”, and with a great desire to put this methodology into practice as future teachers.
