First year students visit the Cycling Museum in a complementary activity

The first-year students of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (CAFYD) of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic UNEATLANTICO) visited on Tuesday, October 21, the Santiago Revuelta Cycling Museum in Santander. The students were accompanied by Professor Jesús Espinosa Gutiérrez, teacher of the subject History of Physical Activity and Sport.

During the activity, students were able to appreciate the valuable sporting and cycling heritage of the museum. The guided tour was led by David Puente, a museum collaborator and former UNEATLANTICO student of the same degree.

This museum is one of the best collections dedicated to cycling in Spain. Its pieces include bikes from the thirties, jerseys of great cyclists, trophies, awards given to personalities of the sport of two wheels, and even vehicles and old video cameras used by journalists in competitions such as the Vuelta Ciclista a España.

The visit concluded with a tour of two halls dedicated to Cantabrian athletics: the first, in honor of the historic ultrafondo athlete José Antonio Soto Rojas, and the second, to the achievements of José Manuel Abascal, bronze medalist at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In both rooms are exposed from clothes and press clippings of the time to a whole numerous set of medals, trophies and national and international awards received by both athletes, shows material of the sports history of our region.

It should be recalled that the Universiudad Europea del Atlántico (European Atlantic University) recently initialled a collaboration agreement with the museum. These visits, which will continue throughout the week, are part of this cooperation, whose purpose is to bring the history of cycling and athletics to the students of UNEATLANTICO.
