The doctor and teacher of the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), Mireia Peláez, participated in the conference of the World Alzheimer’s Day 2024, organized by the Association of Relatives of Alzheimer patients of Cantabria (AFA Cantabria). The event was held at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital and was attended by a large representation of professionals from the sector.
Dr. Mireia Peláez gave a conference entitled “NEUROMOVE: Dual-task training through telerehabilitation for people with cognitive impairment”, based on a study carried out in collaboration between the Valdecilla Research Institute (IDIVAL), the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital and UNEATLANTICO.
The study aims to assess the feasibility of a multicomponent physical exercise program for patients with mild cognitive impairment of neurodegenerative type, who have a high probability of progressing to dementia. The research involves the participation of 20 patients from the Santander hospital.
To date, the desired sample has been recruited, with an adherence to training of 84%. No adverse events have been reported either during the assessments or during training, which indicates that the first objective of the study, feasibility, is being met in a positive manner. The final assessments are expected to be completed in January, which will allow the data to be analyzed and provide indications of the program’s effectiveness.
During the day also participated several professionals who gave talks on new drugs, innovative methods of early detection currently under investigation and various aspects related to the prevention of dementia.
The audience was composed of health personnel from the hospital, professionals from the day centers of the AFAs of Cantabria and patients. The event, open to the public, also allowed the attendance of family members and other people interested in the subject.
The outstanding participation of Dr. Mireia Peláez underscores UNEATLANTICO’s commitment to education in multiple areas, both on and off campus. It also highlights the strong relationships and collaborations that the university maintains with other institutions.
