Dr. Álvaro Velarde Sotres, teacher and researcher at UNEATLANTICO, participates in a UIMP Summer Course

Dr. Álvaro Velarde Sotres, professor and researcher at the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), participates in one of the advanced summer courses offered by the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP).

Every summer, the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP) offers a series of high-profile academic courses in a wide variety of disciplines and areas of knowledge. The UIMP, through these courses, aims to promote reflection and debate on issues at the frontiers of knowledge. In addition, it seeks to promote interdisciplinary analysis of issues that concern the future of our society. These courses are held at the Palacio de la Magdalena and the Campus de las Llamas.
Velarde Sotres participated in the course entitled “Creadores santanderinos y cántabros: la navegación a vela en Santander y Cantabria: Pasión por el mar y el deporte”, which was inaugurated by the Mayoress of Santander, Gema Igual. The course coincides with the tenth anniversary of the Sailing World Championship held in Santander in 2014. That is why, in her inaugural speech, the mayor paid tribute to the history and evolution of sailing in Santander.
The course is aimed at people who love this sport and the sea, professionals in sailing and anyone interested in learning more about sailing. In addition, historians, sailors and experts in the field participated in the course. Topics such as the participation of women in this sport, sailing in the Olympic Games, the experience of Cantabria in the America’s Cup and the history of sailing in Santander were addressed.
The outstanding participation of Dr. Álvaro Velarde Sotres highlights the extensive relationship between the two institutions. It also highlights the commitment that UNEATLANTICO has to promote education in all possible areas, inside and outside its campus.
