A team from the Torrevelo-Peñalabra School, winner of the 7th Liga Preuniversitaria of UNEATLANTICO, will represent Cantabria in the Copa LEDU

A team from the Torrevelo-Peñalabra School, winner of the 7th Liga Preuniversitaria of UNEATLANTICO, will represent Cantabria in the Copa LEDU

The Pangea team, composed of Julia Sierra Rosales, Loreto Moral, María Inés Sáinz, Marina Ruiz Fernández, and Sofía Herrera, fourth year Compulsory Secondary Education students from the Colegio Torrevelo-Peñalabra, has won the 7th Pre-University Debate League organized by the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO), and they will be in charge of representing Cantabria for the first time in the Copa LEDU Preuniversitaria organized by the Spanish University Debate League (LEDU).

The activity was held the week of February 19 at the campus, in the afternoon, with the participation of fifteen teams and more than 70 students from the schools IES Marqués de Santillana (Torrelavega), IES La Marina (Boo de Piélagos), IES La Marina (Santa Cruz de Bezana), Torrevelo-Peñalabra (Mogro), and the Colegio de Castroverde (Santander). 

After some intense debate sessions, Kantando Reflexiones, a team representing IES Marqués de Santillana, won fourth place. For its part, Debatidos de Oreo, a team from IES La Marina, won third place. To conclude with the 7th edition of the Liga de Debate UNEATLANTICO, in a close final, Pangea (Torrevelo-Peñalabra) was proclaimed winner of this 7th Liga Preuniversitaria de Debate, while Píos (Castroverde), was positioned as the second best team of this league. 

In addition to awarding prizes to the two finalist teams, Pangea and Pios, the jury awarded Sofia Herrera, from the winning team, the prize for Best Speaker for her outstanding participation throughout the week. The awards ceremony was presided over by Dr. Manuel Masías, director of the Higher Polytechnic School of UNEATLANTICO; professor Jorge Crespo, director of the Industrial Organization Engineering degree program (IOI); Jose Manuel Breñosa, professor in charge of the Artificial Intelligence course for the degree in Computer Engineering (II); and a student of the degree in Journalism (PER) and member of the winning team of the 6th edition of the Liga de Debate UNEATLANTICO, Paula Díaz-Velarde, were part of the jury.

Luis Eduardo Prado, professor at UNEATLANTICO and organizer of the Liga de Debate, expressed that “it is exciting to see how each round the teams improved their communication skills. This edition of great importance not only for UNEATLANTICO but for all Cantabria has concluded, as we will demonstrate nationally the talent that is harvested among the classrooms of our community. We wish the best of luck to the Colegio Torrevelo-Peñalabra in the Copa LEDU.”
