The Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO) has begun the registration period for the seventh edition of its emblematic University Debate League. Luis Eduardo Prado González, professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and coordinator of the league, highlights its importance during an interview on Cadena SER’s program “La Ventana”.
This year, the central theme of the debate will be: “Does the use of artificial intelligence in academia, as a tool, benefit student development?” The league is open to all undergraduate and master’s degree students enrolled in UNEATLANTICO during the 2023-2024 academic year, who must register in teams of three to five members. At least two of them must be speakers, and no student may be part of more than one team in the league.
During the interview, Prado was accompanied by Hada López, student of IES Marqués de Santillana de Torrelavega and best speaker of the 6th edition of the Pre-University Debate League of UNEATLANTICO, who will participate again in this new edition of the Debate League.
The teacher stressed that “from UNEATLANTICO, we seek to contribute to the development of Soft Skills such as communication skills, instilling critical thinking, research skills as well as self-confidence when speaking in public.”
For her part, Hada López commented on her experience from last year. “It was my first debate experience, and I think it’s very good and necessary at our age.”
In addition to the intellectual competition, UNEATLANTICO offers a free public speaking course that will be taught by Francisco Carrillo, Monica Bóbeda, and Sara Sua starting February 5. This course is mandatory for all Debate League registrants.
Registration in the Debate League can be done through a form available on the website of UNEATLANTICO. The university League will begin on February 26, and participation in the League will earn two ECTS credits.
An opportunity for young talent
It should be noted that this 7th edition of the University Debate League UNEATLANTICO will take place between February 19 and 23. This competition is open to secondary schools and high schools at the regional level. The 2024 edition will be the qualifying tournament for the LEDU Pre-University Cup 2024. This means that the winner of the UNEATLANTICO University Debate League will represent Cantabria in the LEDU Pre-University Cup in Madrid in June.
