UNEATLANTICO students take part in a debate on gender violence organised by El Diario Montañés

Lorena Maza, Paula Arroyo, Inés Fernández and Emiliano Castillo, students of the degrees in Communication and Business Administration and Management (ADE) of the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) participate in a debate on male violence in the framework of the 25N.

El Diario Montañés has brought together fourteen young people between the ages of 18 and 24 on the occasion of 25N, which commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. A meeting in which this group confronted gender violence.

During the meeting, one of the most frequently mentioned reflections was the concern about the lack of awareness about the violence experienced by women, an important factor in this being the education that each person receives at home, ‘everything lies in family values. The way your parents talk to you or even how they relate to each other, whether or not there is superiority. Later, when you get older, those values are what make you able to escape the toxic message that is now on the internet about demonising the feminist struggle and the eradication of violence’, Arroyo affirmed.

Lorena Maza also stressed that ‘there is still a lot to do’, and that violence against women should stop being used as a political weapon. Inés Fernández spoke about the importance of stopping denialism and hoaxes, being aware of who is publishing what.

On the other hand, Emiliano Castillo, a Mexican student, compared gender violence in Spain with that in his country. ‘My country is much more sexist. There are currently around seven feminicides a day’, Castillo stressed, which is why he considers the movements that defend women to be “extremely important”.
