UNEATLANTICO students participate in the Piélagos Festival through the Cantabrian Young Filmmakers Conference

Students studying for a degree in Audiovisual Communication (AC) and graduates of  the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO),  are taking part in the Piélagos International Film Festival. They will collaborate on a screening in Torrelavega on Wednesday 9th April at 6.30pm, showing the short films selected in the 1st Young Cantabrian Filmmakers’ Day.

The Young Cantabrian Filmmakers collective continues its activity of showcasing new Cantabrian filmmakers after the success of the first edition, which managed to fill the Filmoteca de Cantabria to capacity. This has led them to collaborate with the prestigious Piélagos International Film Festival to screen the short films selected in the First Young Cantabrian Filmmakers Workshop.

The screening will be free of charge at the Hermilio Alcalde del Río Cultural Center in Torrelavega this Wednesday, April 9th at 6:30 p.m. Nine short films will be shown and the event will last approximately one hour. In addition, the event will feature a presentation followed by a discussion at the end of the screening, along with a question and answer session.

The works on display deal with a wide range of topics, from the environment to the grieving process to discussions about art itself. In addition, several of them are in the process of being distributed at national and international festivals, earning multiple nominations and awards.

The short films participating in this first day are:

  • “Un western”, by Juanqui Soto and Luis Paredes
  • “Perdona que te moleste”, by Héctor D. Somonte
  • “Kankel, el corazón de la plaza”, by Víctor Díaz and Nerea Pérez
  • “Traiciones”, by Jacobo Chacón
  • “¿Dónde está Nora?”, by Guillermo Sanz and Zaykira Solarana
  • “Conversaciones rotas”, by Daniel González Catalina
  • “Velar”, produced by Jesus Choya Zatarain
  • “El texto culpable”, by Manuela Gutiérrez Arrieta
  • “Cristal”, by Alberto Pacheco

The organizers, Héctor D. Somonte and Diego Aramburu-Zabala, both UNEATLANTICO students, have emphasized that they are very happy with how the first day went. “It was a very special moment that allowed us to connect many new creators who want to enter the sector but did not find the space to do so,” they emphasize. They also say that they are very grateful to the Piélagos festival for collaborating with their initiative and continuing to help give a voice to all the new filmmakers from Cantabria.

It is worth noting that several of the aforementioned short films, such as Un western, Perdona que te moleste and Kankel, el corazón de la plaza, were awarded prizes at the third edition of the UNEATLANTICO Short Film Festival, which highlights the talent and effort that goes into the work produced by members of the university community.
