The European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) reinforces its commitment to educational innovation with the publication of the chapter “E+DIETing_LAB Digital Lab for Education in Dietetics Combining Experiential Learning and Community Service ’ in the book Technological Approaches to Medical and Pharmaceutical Education.
The chapter was written by researchers Iñaki Elío, Thomas Prola, Sandra Sumalla Cano and Kilian Tutusaus Pifarré, who present an innovative proposal for dietetics education based on digital tools and experiential learning methodologies.
This E+DIETing_LAB project responds to an innovative approach to dietetics education and the growing need to improve practical training in dietetics, in a context where the obesity crisis has a significant impact on public health and the economy. To address this issue, the chapter proposes an educational model that integrates virtual patients, service-learning and simulations based on the Process of Nutrition Care (PCN).
Through this approach, students can experience realistic dietetic care scenarios, develop key interpersonal skills and improve their ability to monitor patients. In addition, the initiative encourages community involvement, allowing future professionals to apply their knowledge in a meaningful and socially impactful way.
In terms of impact and future evaluation of the project, the chapter also presents an analysis of the preliminary results of the project, as well as the participants’ impressions, with the aim of assessing the effectiveness of this educational method in preparing dietetics and nutrition professionals.
This work represents a step forward in the digitalisation of health sciences education, aligning with new trends in higher education and strengthening academic quality at UNEATLANTICO.
