Rubén Calderón, Rector of the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) held a meeting with Arturo González Mota, Honorary Consul of Ukraine in Cantabria, in which they recalled the various actions carried out by the university community in favour of the Ukrainian people who were displaced to Cantabria by the war.
During the visit, González Mota thanked the UNEATLANTICO Residence , in collaboration with the Red Cross and the Regional Government, for hosting around 200 Ukrainians, who were displaced due to the war in Ukraine in 2022. This involved a significant logistical effort to have the necessary equipment and ensure the well-being of those who stayed in the residence. This was recognised by the Diario Montañés in the Cantabria Yearbook of the most relevant events of 2022.
On the other hand, it is worth mentioning the hosting in the Assembly Hall of a solidarity event in favour of Ukraine organised by the Club Alpino Tajahierro. The aim of this event was to raise funds to send three generators to a children’s hospital in Ukraine thanks to the solidarity of the Club and the attending public.
Among other actions organised by UNEATLANTICO, it is worth mentioning the collaboration with ‘El Barrio Solidario’ to join forces and support the initiative ‘Peñacastillo with Ukraine’, the first solidarity collection of 2023.
Finally, the visit of the Honorary Consul of Ukraine to the university, was a space in which the possibility of raising future ways of collaboration that are of benefit to the Ukrainian people currently residing in Cantabria was discussed.
