The next academic year 2017/2018 the European University of the Atlanticadds a new degree to its academic offerings, specifically inGastronomic Sciences. This undergraduate will be the fourth degree, available on campus, related to the food area, a sector in which UNEATLANTICO is leader, since this undergraduate will be joining others such as the undergraduate inHuman Nutrition and Dieteticsand the undergraduate inFood Science and Technology, both of them taught in the Faculty of Health Sciences as well as the undergraduate inAgro-Food Engineering, corresponding to the Higher Polytechnic School.
According to the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences,Sandra Sumalla, “the gastronomy requires professionals with solid scientific foundations, able to lead the evolution of the sector and the design of new services and gastronomic products”.
As regards the study plan designed for this undergraduate, “it has a first part of basic training, with subjects such as physics, chemistry or biology, which provide the necessary scientific foundations”.
With such foundations, the student will delve into other more specific fields “of the degree, says Sumalla-,for example International Gastronomy or Design and Innovation in the Food Industry, so that our students have a great employability once the finish the undergraduate.
A specific laboratory of Gastronomic Sciences will be available to students, according to professor Iñaki Elio. “It will be a simulation of a real kitchen, in which students will be able to produce what they have learned in their classes.
The career opportunities are numerous in the sector, as professorSofia Guillén comments. “Restaurant, catering services, hotels or food industry. Students who graduate may practice as head chef, dining services manager or work in the department of R+D+i of agro-food companies”.
Finally, as professor Mercedes Briones, the undergraduate in Gastronomic Sciences may also be available as a dual degree “with the undergraduate in Human Nutrition and Dietetics or with the undergraduate in Food Science and Technology, as they have approximately half of subjects in common”.
