The Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic) (UNEATLANTICO) welcomes the Cantabrian senator Iñigo Fernández in the context of the subject Routines of Journalistic Production: Radio and TV II, by the hand of the teacher Juan Carlos de la Fuente.
The activity, conducted on the university radio and now operational again, provided a unique opportunity for students to interview and dialogue with a well-known political figure, In addition to putting into practice the skills of radio and television journalism.
During his speech, Fernández offered an in-depth analysis of the political situation in Latin America, warning about the degradation of democracy in several countries of the region. He highlighted the cases of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua as examples of absolute dictatorships, and pointed out that Mexico could soon move into the category of “democracy at risk” due to the emptying of the judicial system and the use of institutions for political purposes.
The senator also addressed the importance of judicial independence and human rights protection, as well as the impact of populist leaders in the region, citing examples from Bolivia, El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. He stressed the role of Mexico as a potential leader in Ibero-America thanks to its population, economy and middle classes, warning about the risks that would be associated with consolidating an authoritarian power.
He also reflected on international politics and the recent electoral processes in the United States, providing his vision of how party decisions influence results and democratic stability.
