Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO) , in collaboration with the Plaza Porticada Cultural Association, has organised an expert course entitled ‘Globalisation: Opportunities and Challenges’, to be held on Tuesday 25 March in the university’s Assembly Hall. This initiative is part of the commitment of both institutions to the dissemination of knowledge and the promotion of academic reflection on the challenges posed by the globalised world.
The meeting will be opened by Dr. Rubén Calderón Iglesias, Rector of the European University of the Atlantic, and will be introduced by Ms. Elena García Botín, President of the Plaza Porticada Association. The day will be moderated by Dr. Silvia Aparicio Obregón, vice-rector of Academic Organisation and Teaching Staff of UNEATLANTICO, who will guide the development of the debate and the interventions of the speakers.
The course will include the participation of Dr. Manuel Lucena Giraldo, an outstanding historian and writer with a long career in the academic and research fields. A researcher at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Dr. Lucena Giraldo has been a visiting professor at prestigious universities such as Stanford, Harvard, Tufts (Boston), Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (Colombia), IVIC (Venezuela), Universidad de los Andes (Chile and Colombia), Colegio de México and St. Antony’s College, Oxford University. He has also held important positions in the management of the internationalisation of education, as Education Attaché at the Spanish Embassy in Colombia and Director of the Chair of Spanish and Hispanic Studies at the universities of the Community of Madrid. His research work has focused on the study of globalisation, empires and the history of cities, with more than thirty books and a hundred articles published in several languages.
During the conference, Dr. Lucena will address key issues related to globalisation from a multidisciplinary perspective, offering a comprehensive view of the challenges and opportunities that this phenomenon poses today. Among the topics to be addressed are the historical evolution of globalisation, the influence of social networks and virtual communities, the role of collective identities and the dynamics of global economies. Issues such as cultural perception, the organisation of transitional spaces and the interaction between the material and the symbolic in the global era will also be analysed.
This course is aimed at students, academics and professionals interested in understanding the complex dynamics of globalisation and its impact in different fields. The European University of the Atlantic and the Plaza Porticada Cultural Association seek with this initiative to encourage critical thinking and informed debate on the changes that society is experiencing in an increasingly interconnected world.
The Plaza Porticada Cultural Association, co-organiser of the event, is an institution dedicated to the promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of Cantabria. Since its foundation in 1996, it has played a key role in the conservation and dissemination of the region’s cultural wealth, promoting activities that encourage education and knowledge about history, economics and geopolitics.
