Students of the communication degrees at the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) were invited to the Matilde Zapata Journalism Forum through the College of Journalists of Cantabria, of which Olga Agüero, a teacher at UNEATLANTICO, is the dean. The forum was open to the public and was held at the Palacio de Festivales.
The College of Journalists of Cantabria invited the correspondent of TVE in Paris, Mavi Doñate, as the protagonist of the second Matilde Zapata Journalism Forum, a space open to citizens to analyze the profession and current news through the eyes of experts and professionals in journalism and communication that was inaugurated a few weeks ago by the expert on the Middle East, Ángeles Espinosa.
The aim of the Journalism Forum was to disseminate the role and work of journalists through conversations and meetings with media professionals and, at the same time, to contribute to informing citizens about current affairs through analysis and debate. This forum also served to analyze the role of the media and the evolution of journalism itself.
The journalist began her professional career at Agencia EFE and later worked as an editor for the newspaper Heraldo de Aragón, as well as for the radio stations Onda Cero and Radio Nacional de España. In 1997, she was part of the founding team of TVE’s 24 Horas television channel, where she has worked on the news covering Interior and Courts, Politics and Investigation, as well as working as a special envoy at European Union summits or at the election of Pope Francis.
She has also covered different events in several countries around the world and between 2015 and 2021 she has been RTVE correspondent in Beijing, an experience that allowed her to publish her first book, ‘Bajo la mirada del dragón despierto’, with chronicles on the journalistic coverage she made from China on the coronavirus pandemic. In October 2021, she was appointed RTVE correspondent in France.
She has received important awards such as the Ondas Award to the best presenter for her work as correspondent in the Asia-Pacific area, the Cirilo Rodríguez Journalism Award, the Manuel Chaves Nogales International Journalism Award or the International Press Club Award, which brings together associations of foreign correspondents and Spanish journalists with an international career.
Apart from her journalistic work, Mavi Doñate teaches journalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Montevideo, and gives seminars at the Spanish Radio and Television Institute.
