Third year students of the degree in Journalism (PER) of the Universidad Europa del Atlántico (UNEATLANTICO) carried out a visit to the facilities of El Diario Montañés. The aim of the visit was to learn more about the daily work in the editorial office of the dean of the press in Cantabria.
The Journalism students were accompanied by the teacher and head of Economics at the newspaper, Jesús Lastra, professor of the subject in which this visit took place: Production in Press and Cybermedia.
During the visit, Lastra showed them the newspaper’s facilities, from the exhibition of the most outstanding photographs taken by the newspaper’s staff, to the newsrooms, with an explanation of which section each desk belongs to. He also explained the routines followed in the newsroom, the way in which they are organized, the news criteria, the computer system used for metrics, etc. This was a way for the students to see how it works first hand. In addition, they touched on the use of AI as a support.
They were also accompanied by Lola Gallardo, journalist and editor of El Diario Montañés, who also shared her experience with the journalism students. Gallardo is the coordinator of the digital edition of the newspaper, professor at UNEATLANTICO and president of the Association of Journalists of Cantabria.
Gallardo explained that the newspaper’s website is updated daily at the beginning of the day. She also stressed that in the digital environment, decisions are made quickly and the importance of each news item is assessed in real time. Finally, Lastra also talked about schedules and how everyone can -following the established hours- choose it.
