Within the framework of the subject “Didactics of Social Sciences” taught by Samuel Allende Monje, academic coordinator of the degree, the students of the 4th year of the degree in Primary Education (PE), carried out a didactic itinerary through the Bay of Santander.
The objective of developing this itinerary was to analyze the potential of the environment to contextualize the learning that takes place in the classroom. In addition, by visiting these places, the students were able to contextualize three important milestones in the history of the city: the explosion of Cape Machichaco in 1893, the bombing of 1936 and the great fire of 1941.
The students began their tour by visiting the statue of the Raqueros in the Bay. They then visited the statues in memory of those who died in the explosion of Cape Machichaco and in memory of those who died in the Great Fire of Santander. Finally, the students visited the Botín Center.
Throughout the day and as these visits took place, the students developed different activities in these places in order to understand the background of the historical milestones. In addition, they learned about the consequences they had and how they have affected the conception of the city as we know it.
To implement ICT and complement the activity as such, an augmented reality experience and the creation of a web page were developed. Finally, the students created a newscast in which they recorded themselves being reporters and talking about the events in first person.
In this way, the students of the Primary Education Degree experimented a way to exploit the potentialities offered by the close context of their centers in close relation to the subject of environmental knowledge.
