The team “La última palabra”, comprising Ana Crespo, Pelayo López, Jimena de la Vega, Blanca Gavela and Alejandro Otero from Torrevelo-Peñalabra School, has been crowned the winner of the 9th edition of the UNEATLANTICO Pre-University Debate League.

Thanks to this achievement, the team will represent Cantabria at the Spanish Pre-University Debate Championship, organised by the Spanish University Debate League.

The event took place between 9 and 19 March on campus, in the afternoons, with the participation of twenty-two teams and around a hundred students from the schools of Torrevelo-Peñalabra, IES Fuente Fresnedo, IES La Albericia, IES Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón and Colegio Castroverde.

After some intense debate sessions, Azotamentes, the team representing IES Albericia, came fourth. Meanwhile, Dialéctica, the team from Torrevelo-Peñalabra, took third place. To conclude the competition, in a closely fought final, La Última Palabra (Torrevelo-Peñalabra) was crowned the winner of this league, whilst Noesis (Castroverde) finished as the second-best team in the league.

In addition to awarding prizes to the two finalists – La Última Palabra and Noesis – the jury awarded Jimena de la Vega, from Torrevelo-Peñalabra School, the prize for Best Speaker for her outstanding performance throughout the competition.

The awards ceremony was attended by the institution’s rector, Rubén Calderón; Ignacio Corpas Moya, a member of Dicentis Comunicación and the Spanish University Debate League; and Luis Eduardo Prado, director of the Debate League. It is also worth noting that the judges for the final were members of the winning team from the University Debate League: Paula Díaz-Velarde, Lia Penélope Marzo and Iroska Flamenco.
