The Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO) has relaunched its And Now What? (¿Y ahora qué?) program for the 23/24 academic year. This series of conferences invites top professionals from major global companies to discuss employment opportunities and provide career advice based on their vast experience and the current state of the business world.
Francisco Zuzunegui, director of SITE UNEATLANTICO (International Talent and Employment Service) introduced the 3rd edition of this cycle of conferences that is characterized by inviting professionals of great trajectory to share their experiences in the labor field with the students of UNEATLANTICO.
In this regard, Miguel Mateos, CEO of Energías de Portugal (EDP) in Spain, attended the University’s Assembly Hall to talk about his time at EDP. With a professional career spanning 42 years, Mateos has emphasized the professional decisions that are made during the professional life, and how these have a positive impact on it.
Miguel Mateos, in addition to sharing with all the students of various degrees who attended, gave an important introduction of what EDP is as a company and its commercial activity. During his presentation, attendees received first-hand information from Mateos. Among EDP’s most noteworthy data is the fact that 74% of its energy generation is renewable. Likewise, it is important to mention that the company’s objective is, in the words of Miguel Mateos, “decarbonize, decarbonize, and decarbonize.” To meet this goal, the company expects to be carbon-free by 2025, 100% green by 2030, and “Net Zero” on CO2 by 2040.
Thanks to this presentation, UNEATLANTICO students learned about the concept of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) indexes of which EDP is a leader. At the same time, a review was made of the multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to which the company is committed. Among these goals proposed and promoted by the UN, EDP highlights gender equity and equality, the creation and promotion of affordable and clean energy, the creation of decent work and economic growth, innovation and infrastructure in industry, and the drive towards sustainable cities and communities. It also focuses on other objectives such as encouraging responsible production and consumption, climate action and climate change, concern and action for the life of terrestrial ecosystems, as well as the creation of alliances to achieve its objectives.
In addition to talking about the company, Mateos spoke about the people who make up the company. Globalization and internationalization have helped the group to be comprised of more than 13,000 people from more than 68 countries around the world. Among the professional profiles that are working in Energias de Portugal, it is important to mention that not only engineers work there. To carry out the work in different areas, EPD relies on professionals in Business Administration and Management (ADE), Marketing, Journalism (PER), Languages and Applied Languages (LA), Industrial Organization Engineering (IOI), or Computer Engineering (II).
It is worth mentioning that the 3rd cycle of the And Now What? is a joint initiative of the Centro Empresa Universidad of UNEATLANTICO (Business University Center, CEMU), Fundación Innovación y Desarrollo (Innovation and Development Foundation, FIDBAN), Sociedad para el Desarrollo Regional de Cantabria (Association for the Regional Development of Cantabria, SODERCAN), and CEOE CEPYME Cantabria.
