Dr. Silvia Aparicio, vice rector of the European University of the Atlantic, attended the twenty-third edition of the “Quo Vadis” course at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP). Aparicio expressed her gratitude to the UIMP for maintaining and strengthening relations between the two institutions and stressed the importance of promoting spaces for intellectual exchange such as this course.

Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, led the forum. This course, which is held every summer, has become the key to analysis and debate on the situation of the European Union, especially at a time when the region is facing significant challenges, such as two wars, climate change and trade independence. This year’s edition takes on special relevance as it coincides with the beginning of a new stage after the European Parliament elections held in June. In addition, during their dialogue with Aparicio, both agreed on the relevance of these meetings to understand and face the challenges facing Europe.
During the course, Borrell pointed out that Europe, until now built around the market, must now focus on defense and security as fundamental pillars. In this context, the course was attended by international experts, including Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner General of the UN Agency, who addressed the consequences of armed conflicts on European stability.
In addition, important economic challenges facing the European Union were discussed, such as economic stability, growing competition with powers such as China and economic security.
The exchange between Aparicio and Borrell concluded with the desire expressed by the EU High Representative to collaborate with the European University of the Atlantic on international relations issues, once his mandate ends in January 2025. This collaboration could open new avenues of academic cooperation and further strengthen the ties between UNEATLANTICO and the European institutions.
