The rector of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO) and the Minister for Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, Begoña Gómez del Río, held an institutional meeting with the aim of exploring possible areas of collaboration between the academic university and the Government of Cantabria.
For his part, Rubén Calderón highlighted UNEATLANTICO’s interest in being a strategic partner in the development of innovative projects alongside the Government of Cantabria, contributing the talent of its students and the university’s research capacity in key areas for social cohesion and equal opportunities. In this regard, both institutions agreed on the importance of continuing to work on the design of joint initiatives that contribute to the social and educational progress of the region.
Gómez del Río also praised the university’s willingness to collaborate with both institutions and emphasised ‘the fundamental role of universities in building a more just, inclusive and cohesive society’. He also expressed the Regional Ministry’s interest in promoting synergies that allow ‘the knowledge, innovation and talent of the university community to be harnessed for the benefit of all Cantabrian citizens’.
During the meeting, the rector presented the minister with the university’s history and activities, which currently represent a third of the undergraduate courses offered in Cantabria (15 out of 45 degrees) and account for around 25% of the region’s undergraduate students. In total, the university has more than 9,000 undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and proprietary degree students, representing nearly half of the higher education population in Cantabria.
UNEATLANTICO also stands out for its international reach, with 20% of its undergraduate students and more than 40% of its postgraduate students coming from abroad, as well as for its ability to develop human capital and generate knowledge in strategic areas such as sport, psychology, nutrition, computer engineering, communication, languages and international relations.
