Rubén Calderón, rector of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO), attends the groundbreaking ceremony for the Gastronomic Centre at the University of La Romana (UNIROMANA).

The University of La Romana (UNIROMANA) held its inaugural ceremony, ‘el primer picazo’ (the first sod), attended by several representatives, including the director of the Ibero-American University Foundation (FUNIBER) and the vice-chancellor of International Relations at UNEATLANTICO, Roberto Ruiz.

It is a 2,400-square-metre, two-storey building. It will include storage rooms, cold preparation rooms, a bakery, a workshop and a pastry shop, as well as an auditorium and kitchens. It will also have a cafeteria and restaurant.

Inspired by the model of the renowned hospitality schools in the Basque Country (Spain), the International Gastronomic Centre aims to become the first of its kind in the Caribbean. In addition, it will provide the opportunity to obtain a double degree from UNEATLANTICO and UNIROMANA, strengthening international academic mobility and expanding the professional opportunities of future graduates inside and outside the Dominican Republic.

With the start of this project, which is scheduled to open next year, UNEATLANTICO and FUNIBER reaffirm their mission to promote university work, link academic training with productive sectors, and prepare professionals with the highest educational standards, actively contributing to the economic and social development of the Dominican Republic and the entire Spanish-speaking world.
