The Liga de Debate (Debate League) has become one of the most emblematic activities within the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO). In operation since 2017, this year marks its seventh edition in which students will debate around the following question: “Does the use of artificial intelligence in academia, as a tool, benefit student development?”
One more year, prior to the start of the Liga de Debate, UNEATLANTICO offers a free in-person public speaking course. This training will take place in the afternoon starting on Monday, February 5, and will be taught by relevant “teachers” such as Francisco Carrillo, Mónica Bóbeda, and Sara Sua. This course is mandatory for those enrolled in the Liga de Debate.
The Liga de Debate of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico is a combination of intellectual competition and student training. The purpose of this activity, as defined by Luis Eduardo Prado, professor of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities and member of the league’s organizing committee, is that “students of any grade can access extra knowledge and tools, strengthening their critical spirit as well as their communication skills.”
Operation of the Liga
Participation in the Liga de Debate is open to all undergraduate and master’s degree students enrolled in UNEATLANTICO during the 2023-2024 academic year. Interested students must register in teams of 3 to 5 members of which at least 2 must be speakers, and no student may be a member of more than one team in this league, as outlined in the Reglamento de la Liga de Debate (Debate League Regulations).
Registration in the Liga de Debate, in any of the available modalities (teams or volunteers), can be formalized in a form that is already available on the UNEATLANTICO website.
The university Liga will begin on February 26. Participating in the league will result in two ECTS credits (1 for attending the course and 1 for participating in the league, respectively).
12th edition of the Liga Preuniversitaria UNEATLANTICO
Likewise, the Liga, in its pre-university modality, already has a start date: Monday, February 19. Different secondary schools and high schools in Cantabria are invited to this competition.
This year there is a novelty within this tournament: the 2024 edition will be a qualifying tournament for the Copa LEDU Preuniversitaria 2024 (LEDU Pre-University Cup 2024). This means that the winner of the Liga Preuniversitaria de Debate UNEATLANTICO (UNEATLANTICO Pre-University Debate League) will be crowned champion of Cantabria and will have the opportunity to represent Cantabria in the Copa LEDU Preuniversitaria, which this year will be held in Madrid in September.
