The student of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (CAFYD) at the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic , UNEATLANTICO), Martín González Fredi, has won the bronze medal in the Mediterranean Karate Championship, recently held with the participation of 18 athletes in the category +84 kilos.
Born in Piélagos, Martín started in the world of karate six years ago with his current coach, Cristian, in his village. Since then, he has been forging a solid and promising sports career: «Gradually, as I trained and competed, I devoted more of my life to karate», he explains.
The Mediterranean event was his international debut representing Spain, something he lived with great emotion: It was a very nice experience. The first time I represented Spain in an international competition. When I got on the podium, I was next to some of my referees. It is a moment that I will not forget in my life», he recalls enthusiastically.
This achievement comes just a few months after González climbed to the podium representing UNEATLANTICO in the Spanish University Championship after winning silver.
Despite his dedication to high-level sport, Martín successfully combines his training with university studies, thanks to the support of UNEATLANTICO. «University gives me a lot. I study a sports-related career, so it helps me to understand what I do» he says.
The immediate future gives him no respite: the last weekend of September he will participate in the second round of the national stage at Pontevedra, and the following week he will travel to Malaysia to compete in Serie A, an international competition that will bring together the best karatekas from all over the world.
