Marta Santiago, current PhD student of the PhD in Physical Activity and Sport: Risks and Benefits, at the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) together with her PhD directors, Susana Pulgar, from the Degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) at UNEATLANTICO and Hugo Olmedillas Fernandez, lecturer at the University of Oviedo, have published a research article in the framework of their PhD, on the platform The Conversation.

The article entitled ‘Beyond weight: anorexia nervosa also affects the heart’, focuses on the various ways in which anorexia nervosa affects health, with special emphasis on how it affects the heart and the cardiovascular problems that can arise as a result.

On the other hand, the article also stresses that treatments for this disorder should take a broader and more holistic approach. The fact that the patient reaches a healthy weight does not guarantee complete normalisation of the body. Imbalances in the autonomic nervous system may persist and therefore a more comprehensive approach is important for a full recovery.

Santiago also stresses the importance of physical activity and how an active lifestyle can help complete healing and improve the body’s autonomic regulation. Finally, he highlights the severity of the disease and how it affects not only malnutrition but also the heart.
