Second year students of the degree in Journalism of the Universidad Europea del Atlántico (European University of the Atlantic, UNEATLANTICO) have visited the facilities of ArcoFM, a radio station based in Santander, to learn first-hand about its operation and the possibilities for internships at 87.7 FM.
In the context of the subject “Theory and Practice of Journalistic Genres (Interpretation and Opinion),” the students of Journalism of UNEATLANTICO made an enriching visit to the facilities of ARCO FM, accompanied by Professor Olga Agüero, who also holds the position of Dean of the Colegio de Periodistas de Cantabria (College of Journalists of Cantabria). Once again, Jesús García-Bermejo, director of the station, together with his partner, Nano Teja, gave a warm welcome to the students.
During the visit, both shared with the students of UNEATLANTICO the ins and outs of how the radio station works and stressed the importance of carving out a space in the workplace, presenting ARCO FM as a valuable option to do so. Not surprisingly, they pointed out that many professionals who once did internships and worked in this medium now occupy prominent positions, thus emphasizing the professional opportunities offered by the experience at the station.
After a detailed explanation of the internal workings and internship opportunities, students were given the opportunity to participate in a live program: “¡A mediodía, alegría!” (At midday, joy!), presented by Chuchi Guerra with Nano Teja. During their participation, the students had the opportunity to offer their impressions on relevant topics such as the importance of communication and its application, as well as the disadvantages that some media may face with digitalization, all in a relaxed and lively atmosphere.
This experience has been an invaluable opportunity for future communicators to acquire a genuine understanding of the inner workings of a media outlet and to familiarize themselves with some of the options available to them since year after year numerous students pass through the microphones of ARCO FM to learn by working on its magazine, “¡A mediodía, alegría!,” as well as on the sports program, “Tiro al Arco” (Archery), among others. These job opportunities are provided to students through the Centro Empresa Universidad (Business University Center, CEMU), which promotes the insertion of students into the labor market.
