Javier Costas Veiga, lecturer of the degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) of the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) participated in the II International Blue Flag Congress: sustainability, health and safety. The congress was co-organised by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) and the City Councils of l’Alfàs del Pí (Alicante) and Gandía (Valencia).

The aim of the congress was to share experiences and examples of sustainable tourism. It was attended by 48 people representing 41 different public and private entities, of which only 6 were universities. The congress was held over three days with a series of lectures, talks on safety and lifeguarding and practical content on the beach. The content of the congress was divided into four blocks: sustainability, health and accessibility, safety and lifeguarding, and environmental education.

Costas gave a practical workshop on updating first aid and rescue techniques, through the implementation of an aerial rescue drill, fitting in with the lifeguarding block. The workshop was given in conjunction with other teachers from other universities, also specialised in these techniques. In addition to this, the congress offered activities for people with disabilities on the beach and practical environmental education activities.
