Professor Imanol Eguren, has published an article entitled Risk Factors for Eating Disorders in Uuniversity Students: The RUNEAT Study, in the journal Healthcare. This article is part of the professor’s doctoral thesis, which has been written and researched in collaboration with Sandra Sumalla, Sandra Conde, Ana Vila, Iñaki Elío, Mercedes Briones and Raquel Martínez.

The research was based on first and fourth year students of the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO) at the beginning of the course and at the end. A total of 129 students were analyzed and administered the SCOFF, EAT-26 and BITE tests in order to assess the risk of generating an eating disorder (ED), which can be anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. The article is based on the study conducted by the teachers. The research sought to find the probability and risks that university students have of developing different eating disorders.

Eguren’s publication explains in detail the procedures that were carried out in order to conduct this study, including the materials and methods used. In addition, it includes a series of images so that the reader can have a visual support of the way in which the results obtained were calculated.

ABOUT THE RUNEAT STUDY

The study used the degree of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MEDAS-14) to assess the quality of the participants’ diet. The results of the study showed that at the beginning of the course, 34.9% were at risk of generating an ATT, while at the end of the course 37.2% were at risk. In addition, it was shown that women were 2.5 times more at risk of developing an ATT at the end of the course, even though adherence to the diet would improve.
