Florent Osmani, coordinator and teacher of the Degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) at the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), has published a scientific research article that is part of his doctoral thesis.
Dr. Carlos Lago Fuentes, academic director of the degree in CAFYD, collaborated in the elaboration of the article. The article entitled Can Women Maintain Their Strength Performance Along the Menstrual Cycle, published in Applied Sciences, analyses how the different phases of the menstrual cycle affect physical effort, pain and the number of repetitions women can perform to exhaustion in squat and bench press exercises, as well as their impact on subsequent fatigue.
The study involved a sample of twelve active women with regular menstrual cycles who performed both exercises to exhaustion, at 80% of their maximum, in three phases of the menstrual cycle: early follicular phase, late follicular phase and mid-luteal phase.
The results indicated that perceived exertion and muscle soreness were similar in all phases. It was also shown that the menstrual cycle can influence repetition capacity to exhaustion, especially in leg exercises, and fatigue levels.
