The lecturer of the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), Dr. Angel Olider Rojas Vistorte, has delivered the conference “Mental disorders and the problematic use of social networks” in the city of Praia, Cape Verde. The event aimed to foster a space for reflection on the importance of mental health.
The conference was organized by the European University of the Atlantic (UNEATLANTICO), the Ibero-American University Foundation (FUNIBER) and the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde (UNIPIAGET).

The dissertation addressed the relationship between the problematic use of social networks and certain mental disorders. According to the expert, these platforms have positive aspects, such as the exchange of information and the acquisition of knowledge. However, excessive use and the way they are used can induce changes at the neurophysiological level, resulting in the development of mental disorders. The spectrum of people affected is wide, ranging from young people to adults in their 40s.

This inappropriate use can lead to loss of identity, difficulties in personality formation and behaviors detrimental to health. Dr. Rojas pointed out that eating disorders, depression and anxiety are some of the problems linked to the chemical dependency generated by social networks.

Finally, there was a discussion on possible strategies to reduce the symptomatology caused by the excessive use of them and, in this way, contribute with preventive actions to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Cape Verde.

With a solid vocation for teaching and research, Dr. Rojas has promoted various initiatives aimed at promoting dialogue on fundamental mental health issues, backed by a rigorous scientific basis. Ángel Rojas holds a PhD in Psychiatry and Medical Psychology from the Federal University of São Paulo. He is also a researcher at the Program for Recognition and Intervention in Mental States at Risk (PRISMA) and at the Brazilian Institute of Psychopharmacology and Pharmacogenetics (BIPP). Currently, he teaches in the Master’s Degree in Neurology at UNEATLANTICO, an institution that is part of the university network in which FUNIBER participates.

FUNIBER reaffirms its commitment to the promotion of spaces for reflection on topics that address contemporary issues, through the voice of academic experts.
