Communication students attend the live broadcast of the local magazine of COPE Cantabria

Students of the degrees in Journalism, Audiovisual Communication and Advertising and Public Relations of the European University of the Atlantic have learned first-hand how a radio programme is broadcast. On this occasion Cristina Jimeno presented the magazine of the COPE channel from the University’s Assembly Hall, with the participation of some members of the UNEATLANTICO community.

The space was opened with the intervention of the vice-rector for academic planning and teaching staff, Silvia Aparicio, who highlighted the remarkable growth experienced by the university since its foundation in 2014. What began with eight degree programmes and around 300 students has become an academic community of more than 9,000 students, with 900 new students this year. In addition, he pointed out that approximately one third of Cantabria’s university students are part of UNEATLANTICO. ‘We want to look to the next ten years with a vision of expansion, especially to continue to be an engine of development for Cantabria’, emphasised Aparicio, stressing the importance of the regional impact of the university.

On the other hand, Cristina Jimeno invited several students from the communication degrees to take part in the programme. She asked them about their experiences and expectations for the future, as well as how they felt about the university environment being such an international community. The students who took part in this intervention were Sebastián Soto, a Costa Rican first-year student of Audiovisual Communication (CA), Paula Díaz-Velarde, a third-year student of Journalism (PER) with the Expert in International Relations, Isabela Soto, a Mexican and second-year student of Advertising and Public Relations (PRP), and Álex Martin and Ricardo Suárez, first-year students of Journalism with the Expert in Sports Journalism.

After spending a few minutes with the students, the journalist from COPE Cantabria spoke with the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Sandra Sumalla, to find out the ins and outs of how a new generation of professionals is prepared in such a changing professional world. She also stressed the importance of UNEATLANTICO being the only university in the region with all the degrees in food.

In the second part of the programme, Florent Osmani, coordinator of the degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences (CAFYD) and Fernando Maniega, lecturer of the same degree, talked about how science and sport merge to open new doors to knowledge and professional opportunities. In this line, Osmani presented the study, which forms part of her doctoral thesis, that she is carrying out on how the menstrual cycle affects physical performance in women. In addition, Maniega spoke about the way in which this degree is taught and the job opportunities it offers, also promoting research in the competitive world of sport. Also participating in the programme was Jesús García, a naturalist and populariser for Cadena COPE, who proposed a trip back in time to the beach of Oyambre.

To close the broadcast of the programme Herrera en COPE and Mediodía Cantabria, Ángela Ruiz, professor of communication degrees, graduate of UNEATLANTICO and with an outstanding career, spoke about the training of future communication professionals in a world that is increasingly affected by artificial intelligence.
